3/30/2023 0 Comments Gss 2012 codebook![]() ![]() This study explores 2 years of data collected by the National Science Foundation (NSF) for Indicators-2001and 2012-in which a supplementary module of questions about perceptions of scientists was included. It is these questions that are explored here. National Science Board’s biennial Science and Engineering Indicators report to the President and Congress as part of the chapter on “Public Attitudes and Understanding” (e.g., National Science Board, 2014c). The importance of perceptions about scientists can be seen in the long-time inclusion of perception questions in the U.S. More generally, perceptions about scientists also underlie questions about whether or not scientists can be trusted ( Earle, Siegrist, & Gutscher, 2007). This interest in perceptions of scientists has also emerged in the study of media content ( Dudo, Cicchirillo, Atkinson, & Marx, 2014 Dudo et al., 2011 Gerbner, Gross, Morgan, & Signorielli, 1981) and cognitive representations of science ( Losh, Wilke, & Pop, 2008).
